Menopause is a strange beast in Western Society. If we talk about it at all, we are complaining to each other about the hot flushes.
We have learnt to dread menopause, to see it as the end of womanhood, and to feel like it’s out of our control.
Australian Aboriginal traditional culture celebrates the woman as she reaches menopause. She has become wise. It’s a positive time in her life.
One of the aims of the Embracing Change series we are running at Just Believe Fit is to change our perspective and look at menopause in a more positive light. Not only will we spend this time doing yoga poses, breathing practices and meditation designed (and proven) to improve the symptomatic experience of menopause, but we will spend time changing our attitude towards the change, embracing it, and communing with, and supporting, other women in the same situation. We have run this workshop series once before and it was a wonderful, warm environment with incredible women (who deserve to be celebrated as they get older and gather wisdom). These women have so much to give and to share. It’s not about becoming invisible, which is something I think all women dread in Western society as they get older; it’s not about withdrawing, but standing strong and tall, celebrating all we have become, and being all we can be.
