Instructor Spotlight: Get to Know Florencia

Zumba with Florencia at Just Believe Fit in Thornbury

There’s a party at Just Believe Fit and it happens every week on a Thursday at 7.00pm. One of your hosts at this lively Latin dance fest that is Zumba is Florencia. We are looking forward to welcoming back Florencia after an illness, this week. And so, in our latest instructor spotlight, discover more about Florencia, including her unique head-patting Zumba move…

When did you first fall in love with Zumba?
I had already been teaching Latin dance for a few years when I heard that Zumba instructor training was coming to Australia in 2009. I loved that the Zumba program found a unique way to combine dance, fitness, culture, and fun and that it was suitable for anyone and everyone, no dance experience required. Every class really does feel like a party and brings joy and movement to participants of all ages and levels.

Favourite type of class and why?
Zumba. See above 😉

How did you end up teaching?
Very soon after completing my instructor training, I launched my own class. I hired a hall and bought a speaker. The turn-out on opening night was amazing. And the rest, as they say, is history.

Funniest teaching moment?
In Zumba we use visual cues far more than verbal cues as we love you (the participants) to hear and feel the music. For example, we may point in the direction we’d like you to go or we may hold up a number of fingers to indicate the number of steps. Participants get used to this style and very easily familiarise themselves with this helpful teaching tool. However, in one new class once I patted the top of my head to indicate ‘from the top’, i.e. go back to the start of the routine. I laughed out loud when I saw about half the class all patting the tops of their heads while dancing.

Favourite post-class meal?
Anything Asian. So many great local faves on High St.

Favourite snack?
I never snack. Generally, I do intermittent fasting and live on two meals, most days of the week. But that’s a story for a whole other article…

What is the biggest thing you have learned that has changed your life?
Health is more important than wealth.

What is your personal mantra?
Slow down.

What is something about you people wouldn’t know?
I have a cute dog named Mambo. (Yes, I named my dog after a Latin Dance!)
