The latest instructor spotlight is on our Pilates instructor Jem King. Jem has made following her passions an artform. She’s a wonderful Pilates teacher, talented photographer, and … find out about her other, very noisy, pursuit, by reading on.
When did you first fall in love with Pilates?
I was in love with Pilates from the first class I took 2 years ago. I was recovering from a back injury and in a few weeks I felt stronger physically and mentally.
What is your favourite type of class and why?
Pilates! The exercises and transition combinations are endless which makes sure you never feel like you are just going through the motions in class. Plus, it can be tailored to suit different goals such as strength, release, mindfulness or cardio. It really is a one-stop shop for the mind and body.
How did you end up teaching?
I realised one of the best parts of my week was going to Pilates, so I decided to have more ‘best parts’ of my week. It has been one of the best decisions I’ve made.
What is your funniest teaching moment?
When I instructed the class to “take your knees out from your balls…”
What is your favourite post-class meal?
Japanese miso tofu with some sort of veggies and quinoa.
And favourite snack?
Peanut butter on anything…
What is the biggest thing you have learned that has changed your life?
To not feel guilty about rest days every now and then. (This is a work in progress.)
What is your personal mantra?
What is something about you people wouldn’t know?
I also play electric guitar in a band and love the rush of getting up on stage to make some noise!
