HEALTH, FITNESS AND FUN FOR

MATURE MOVERS

"Ageing is not lost youth but a new stage of opportunity and strength." - Betty Friedan

Exercise is an important part of nearly everyone’s everyday health. This is true for older adults, too. Experts say seniors should aim to be as active as possible. If you are an older adult, exercise can help you live a longer, healthier life.

There are many benefits of exercising when you’re a senior, including:

  • It improves your strength. This helps you stay independent.
  • It improves your balance. This prevents falls.
  • It gives you more energy.
  • It prevents or delays diseases, such as heart disease, diabetes, or osteoporosis.
  • It can improve your mood and fight off depression.
  • It may improve cognitive function (how your brain works)

It is safe for most adults older than 65 years of age to exercise. Even patients who have chronic illnesses can exercise safely. These include heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and arthritis. In fact, many of these conditions are improved with exercise. If you are not sure if exercise is safe for you, or if you are currently inactive, ask your doctor.

ONLINE CHAIR-BASED CLASSES

CHAIR-BASED FITNESS

STRENGTH AND MOBILITY

Bodies change and so should the way we look after them. Learn the correct strength, stability and conditioning techniques to keep you fit and free-moving as your body matures. Build confidence in your body’s unique abilities and take the next steps in your fitness journey.

When not in lockdown, this class is taught live but simultaneous streamed to participants at home. We use a chair as a base from which to exercise and include props like stretch bands and light handweights. This 45-minute class focuses on improving strength, flexibilty and cardio fitness but with the stabilising help of a chair.

If your standing balance is challenged then this might be just the class you need to keep the blood flowing around your body and keep your fitness on track.

What you can expect to find in a Mature Movers class.
Exercise safely at home with the support of a chair

CHAIR YOGA

Find mobility in a way that is more gentle than the usual yoga class, but just as beneficial. Chair yoga classes bring all the benefits of yoga to you. All you need is a chair.

Useful to introduce increased circulation, flexibility, joint health and exercise to your life, as well as the pervading peace and calm, and stress-management for which yoga is renowned.

Incorporating seated and standing poses using the chair, mindfulness and breath-work, in these classes there is no pressure on the shoulders, knees and wrists, and no getting up and down off the floor.

Some of us lost our rhythm a long time ago – can it be found again? If anyone can find a lost groove it will be Joy Curtis! With infectious enthusiasm for busting a move, Joy leads an eclectic group of fun lovers through patterns of movement to unlock the basic rhythm that exists in all of us, even though some of us have not danced or pranced for many years. Even the most self conscious will be too busy laughing and moving to worry about what it might look like. We are not on stage (fortunately!), we are are just having a lot of fun moving around.
